Public education should prepare us not only for work, but for democracy, community, and life together.

Communities for Our Colleges believes public education is essential to democracy, belonging, and collective thriving.

From early learning to higher education, public education should help people build meaningful lives, participate in civic life, and strengthen the communities they call home.

We believe education is a public good — not a privilege reserved for the wealthy or a system designed only to meet labor market demands. Schools and colleges should expand opportunity, cultivate critical thinking, and help people develop the relationships, skills, and power needed to shape a more just and democratic society.

At a time when public institutions, multiracial democracy, and community trust are increasingly under attack, we believe public education must remain a space where people can learn, participate, belong, and build a shared future together.

Our vision includes:

  • Affordable and accessible education for all
  • Racial and economic justice
  • Democratic participation and civic engagement
  • Strong public institutions that serve communities
  • Education systems rooted in dignity, belonging, and the public good
