Communities for Our College Campaign: Gov. Inslee Signed Expansion of Working Connections for Immigrant Families
Yesterday, Governor J. Inslee signed SSB 5225 into law. This legislation makes important adjustments to eligibility for the Working Connections Child Care program. While Washington State encourages its undocumented population to attend college through its student aid system, it has simultaneously discouraged this participation by denying many of them access to childcare support. SSB 5225 rectifies this inequity.
The expansion include students who might become childcare providers. It also expands coverage to undocumented student, who until now could use the state’s student aid system.
“Even though I want to be in early childhood education, I have struggled to get childcare for my own children. This isn’t unusual for people like me who have children. Parent that don’t have anyone to take care of their children can’t go to school. The expansion of Working Connections will allow parents like me to pursue higher education at our local community of technical college” said Araceli Lopez, a student at Yakima Valley College.
Students organizations, including Communities for Our Colleges (C4C), pushed the new law to ensure all students have the benefit of state programs by removing unnecessary barriers to attendance. In September 2022, C4C published a report about the barriers to accessing childcare benefits for community college students in the state.

Communities for Our College Campaign: El Gobernador Inslee Firmó la Expansión de Working Connections para las Familias Inmigrantes.
Ayer, el Gobernador J. Inslee promulgó SSB 5225 como ley. Este proyecto de ley hace ajustes importantes a la elegibilidad del programa de Working Connections Child Care. Aunque el Estado de Washington ayude a la comunidad indocumentada a que participe en nuestras universidades usando el sistema de apoyos para el cuidado infantil, simultáneamente disuade esta participación al negar acceso a apoyos para el cuidado infantil. SSB 5225 rectifica esta inequidad.
Esta expansión incluye estudiantes que posiblemente se convertirán en proveedores de cuidado infantil. También esta expansión incluye cobertura a estudiantes indocumentados, los cuales ya utilizan el sistema de apoyo estudiantil financiero.
“Aunque me gustaría enfocar mi carrera en la educación infantil, he tenido dificultad en acceder a apoyos para el cuidado infantil de mis propios niños. Esto no es inusual para personas como yo que tenemos niños. Padres y madres de familia que no tienen a nadie que les pueda cuidar sus niños no pueden ir a la escuela. La expansión de Working Connections permitirá que mamás como yo puedan seguir sus sueños de educación universitaria en su colegio comunitario o técnico,” dijo Araceli Lopez, estudiante de Yakima Valley College.
Estudiantes y organizaciones sin fines de lucro, incluyendo Communities for Our Colleges (C4C), empujaron este proyecto de ley para asegurar que todos los estudiantes tengan el beneficio de programas estatales al remover barreras innecesarias para su participación.
