Student Story: Killian Parra

My name is Kilian Parra. I am currently revalidating my studies from my native country, Colombia, to the United States as a degree in industrial engineering. I am doing this in order to continue my studies at YVC and obtain my degree, also for my time and obligations.

I am taking online English classes, since it is very difficult for me to stop working because I am the head of the household. Being able to have my degree here in the United States would be something very important for me.

Currently the biggest barrier I face is economic because I have to work for my family and support my home, and on the other hand I do not have the resources to be able to finish my degree, and time is very limited since I have to focus on my job. Free college it would mean opportunity, because then I wouldn’t have so much economic pressure and I could study, although I have my obligations as a father I would look for a way to work time outside of school and thus complete my goal and more because I have only worked in an apple packing and I feel good doing it, but I am a dad and I want to give my son a better future and be someone he admires in the future.

Also being able to get a job at college while I study, would be very motivating because then I could work at the same college, and have more time for my tasks and additionally give me the opportunity to get to know new work environments and develop the skills that I have, that is why If I could have the option of work study it would be very beneficial to achieve my goals, at this moment I would not be able to do it, but if given the opportunity it would be a great opportunity for me.

This is why the person who reads my testimony would tell you that if you can support me with free college, do so. You don’t know the dreams that would come true and the opportunities and paths that would open up for me and not only for me but for many people who I know. they need it.
