Student Story: Heyvi Shirley

My name is Heyvi, and I am a GED student at OIC. I want to go to community college because, in my country, Colombia, I studied hairstyling, and I would like to continue studying Cosmetology or, in effect, be able to start a childcare business.

I would feel proud to continue with my studies and, at my age, be able to return to my professional life. I have three children, the youngest of whom is graduating this year, and if God allows it, I want him to start studying at school. My middle son graduated three years ago but did not continue his studies because he dedicated himself to work. Time prevents him from going to school since I work in a warehouse, and with my salary, I cannot help him pay for his studies. I support him with household expenses, but unfortunately, I cannot allow him to spend one. University degree, and my oldest daughter is already a mother and is currently studying English classes. My main dream is to see them graduate and obtain a better quality of life, but on the other hand, I would like to resume my studies. But currently, with my work schedule in apple packing, it would be very difficult for me to study, and I would like to have access to study for a better quality of life.

That’s why, for me, the possibility of free college would be very important, not only for me but also for my children. They could continue with their studies, and I would have the option to look for new opportunities. For the person who reads my testimony, I would tell them to support us with free college because that would help many people, including my children and me. I would tell them that we would contribute a lot to society. The only thing we want is to improve ourselves and have a better quality of life.
