Student Story: Alexis Delgado

My name is Alexis Delgado. I am a first generation college student. I am going into media communications because of my interest in writing, photography, and interacting with people. I decided to go to Everett Community College because it was the cheaper option and it is close to home.

I want to hopefully get into public relations. I want to work for a brand, whether that is a sports team or gaming company. This is a career goal of mine because they are both big interests and passions of mine.

Raising prices in our current economy makes it harder to pay for tuition, especially for lower to middle class students. It shouldn’t just be a privilege for higher class students to attend college, other students shouldn’t be left behind. Books and materials are extremely expensive and are hard to afford at times. During one of my quarters, one of my books was $250 for access for three months. I wish FAFSA would offer more money and be less picky with helping with funding.

Overall, they do help a lot with the load of tuition and fee costs, but the accessibility of materials and books is still a financial burden. Personally, guaranteeing the first two years of college for CTC students would make me feel more prepared. Some financial problems have come up and I felt the need to put education on the back burner. Expanding wraparound services would encourage more future students to pursue education compared to others that have faced financial barriers. Free college would help me stay focused on education and less focus on other financial issues.
